Two large metal hand-held objects are activated in the space through performance actions. The performers utalise various positions, using a pre-choreographed score, activating the objects in the gallery. They display strength and endurance as they test the body and its powerful relationship to space, gender and sexuality. The work carefully explores bodies, territory and their aesthetic/ political distance with one another. The work is an outcome from the Open Bodies programme, inspired by the women of Rio De Janeiro and self-defence classes in the city. Open Bodies: a residency programme for artists working with performance with an interest in gender and/or sexuality, designed jointly by Despina (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and The Fruitmarket Gallery with support from British Council and Creative Scotland.
