A live performance and installation using hand-held physical props and visual scores. The work reflects the artist’s response to the aesthetic and political distance of body and gender whilst navigating the local terrain of Rio de Janeiro. Two performers are instructed to carry out a set of repeating actions using the sculptural devices, similar to foam exercise pads, covered in recognisable carnival fabric. After each action, the strike is documented with a photograph of the device before re-setting the game. The action is carried out over 90 mins, the same duration self-defence classes for the LGBTQ community are held in the city, which the artist attended whilst on residence. Through these actions, the artist explores the relationship between our bodies, the spaces they present in and the territory they claim.
“The performance you developed here in Rio put together a very accurate sight of women, and in a broader sense, all of us. We are sad, defensive, afraid, surrounded by glitter...” Maria Clara Contrucci, Artist, Rio de Janeiro , 2018
